The Human Computer To The Quantum Computer

We talk about the beginning of computers - humans doing trajectory calculations during World War II - to the future - utilizing the properties of the quantum world to take computing out of this universe.

Quantum computing... it's like computing across the multi-verse.

2012: The Beginning Of The New World

We discuss the Star Trek-ification of the future and what's coming... the tricorder, the replicator (3D Printing), warp drive, the holodeck... and how we're winning the future.

William Gibson said, "The future is already here – it's just not evenly distributed." We're optomistic that 2012 will be the start of the distribution.

Some people say that the world is coming to an end... and I actually believe that - I think that a new and better world is coming... This world is coming to an end, but something much better and brighter is before us.

Quicklaunching off Earth With Dr. John Hunter

We spoke with Dr. John Hunter, physicist turned president of QuickLaunch about their goal to deliver propellant (and other necessities) to space at less than 10% of the current cost. Think Jules Verne's space gun in From the Earth to the Moon - but instead of launching people - they're launching fuel and freight (which is responsible for 90% of the weight of a traditional space craft).

...See guys like me - a lot of the hardcore space guys - really think we should get off the planet and at least explore Mars and the moon... and put scientific groups on those locations... Who knows what you're going to find - that's the nature of exploration.  You go out there and jump into the deep end and hopefully you make it back to the side of the pool.

Protect The Economy Using Equilcurrency

We spoke with Max Funk from Protect The Economy about Equilcurrency and his hopes for a more efficient and transparent, system-wide accounting platform.

Cooperativism is unlike any economic policy that anyone has ever heard before - it is not communism, it is not socialism - what it does is fill in the gaps that capitalism is missing... With cooperativism, participants in an economy must have equal access to the same information...

Robots With Peter Pastor

Peter Pastor is from USC's Computational Learning & Motor Control Lab. He recently won best paper at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots & Systems. You can read more about the lab and their win at USC - Viterbi School of Engineering.

So bascially Brandon wants a robot that would exist to nerd out with him, whereas  most people would want robots to do menial tasks, like clean...

Bitcoin: A New Generation of Payments?

Simone Syed is on the inside. She has been working with Tradehill, an online Bitcoin merchant. We spoke with her about what bitcoin is, what's preventing the bitcoin market from stabilizing and the security concerns with a completely digital means of exchange.

...it's a bird, it's a plane... it's a currency, it's a commodity, it's a security... it's digital gold"

Code The Change You Wish To See With Code Hero

In conversation with Alex Peake, Founder and CEO at Primer Labs, who have developed Code Hero, a video game that teaches you how to make video games.

What we're fundamentally trying to do is to put the player in the mindset that they are a Code Hero - not that they're playing a game about being a Code Hero - but by playing this game they are doing things that coders have done since the very beginning of computers. The goal really is to prime people - inspire and prepare them to pursue it further... It's an epic calling. It's something you're being taught how to do, but most of all it makes you want to do it.

Turning Into Gods: The Edge of Digital Culture

We spoke with Jason Silva, producer at Current TV - whose work has also been featured in Vanity Fair, Fast Company, and the Huffington Post - about his upcoming film, "Turning Into Gods."

"Turning Into Gods" celebrates this notion that we will not go quietly into the night... Technology might be where man finally can have that catharsis that he has been looking for symbolically and mythologically beforehand. Technology might be the way that man might eventually make himself immortal and solve his existential sort of cosmic tragic comedy condition that he has been in.

The 4th Paradigm: Interpretation Of Big Data

Chris Kemp, Founder and CEO of Nebula, is working to solve the data storage problem so that, "any company can easily build out and automatically configure a flexible, massively scalable cloud computing infrastructure in minutes, not months."

Computers are generating more and more and more data and so increasingly the outputs of a super computer is an incredible amount of data that humans have to then take in and understand and visualize... there's a whole ecosystem of tools that allow us to take this massive amount of data and draw conclusions from it - that's the fourth paradigm. So we're really inspired by that and so what we're trying to do is build the infrastructure for a world where every industry data is driving everything.

AI Learning To Win Civilization... By Learning Language

Oh the language games we play... well now, not just us huamns are doing it, but AI as well.  S.R.K. Branavan is a graduate student at MIT's Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab - where they taught a machine how to win the strategy game civilization by reading the manual. Just imagine if robots are able to interpret human language, then they can learn how to do tasks they have not previously come into contact with.

If you'd like to read the original paper, click here.

If you'd like to setup the virtual machine, click here.

The idea is that giving a computer access to information recorded in human language can significantly improve its chances of doing well in whatever task you want it to do... it's what humans do... Also, you don't need to know language beforehand to be able to leverage the information encoded in human language...
