Low Cost, Production Quality Cameras... Made In California

RED Digital Cinema started the trend of lowering the price of motion picture quality cameras. Their cameras are predominately used for 3D film making - films like The Hobbit are shot with RED Cameras. What's most interesting, and why we chose to highlight RED from our NAB trip, is that fact that they are made in California.

The cameras are built in the United States of America. It's a unique story in that everyone makes the assumption that high-end technology like this has to be build someplace else, and not in the US. It's not all that known - the RedOne cameras were actually build offshore - and we did some assembly and final testing in the US. We decided that we would try and bring all the technology back to the states and see if we could actually do manufacturing in the US and it worked out...

The Mojave Makers: A Maker Space At The Gateway To Space

Maker Spaces (aka Hacker Spaces) are a great place for brilliant minds to come together to socialize and collaborate. They are open community labs, incorporating elements of machine shops, workshops/studios where members come together to share resources and knowledge to build and make things.

This week we spoke with Ethan Chew & Scott Nietfeld of the Mojave Makers - a new maker space at the gateway to space.

To understand why a maker space in Mojave is important, you have to understand kind of the culture of the area. As you mentioned, there's really not much there except for the airport, but the airport is a huge deal. There are all sorts of very intelligent, particularly younger guys working on very interesting things there... and they  are not there for the money or the scenery, they're there because that's what they love to do. So for most of us, when we go home, we don't stop working, we just work on different things... and there was really no venue for that.

(Re)Build Our World With Nationbuilder

Nationbuilder is the first community organizing system - it's both a website and a people database that's fully integrated - to help leaders grow and organize their communities to acheive great things. It brings the tools that political leaders like Obama and Romney use to everyone. Whether you're a local candidate, a non-profit, or a radio show... it gives everyone the ability to organize around an idea.

We spoke with Jim Gilliam, the founder and CEO, of Nationbuilder. He also co-founded Robert Greenwald's, Brave New Films. His speech, "The Internet Is My Religion," at the Personal Democracy Forum has been viewed over 500,000 times and been called the best video on the internet. We spoke with Jim about why he created Nationbuilder, who will use it, venture capital funding, and how it has the power to change the world.

A lot of conservatives talk about the free-market, what about the free-market for governance, and what does that look like? The potential to experiment with that online, with these online communities, where blood isn't shed. Where we can figure out these problems through code and then it will naturally spill out into the IRL... It's what gets me really excited about this, this is the problem to solve. How can nations form, how can people come together at scale across the entire world instantaneously?

Rant On Data & Privacy: Wake Up - Knowledge Is Power!

There was (it has since been pulled from the app store) an iPhone app called "Girl's Around Me" that literally did just that... found all the girls around you with links to pictures and information about them. Basically it was an aggregate of Facebook and Foursquare's API, which used Location Services to track where girls are. Brittney weighs in as a woman technologist and how this really isn't unexpected.

We also discussed Lewis Hill, the founder of the Pacifica Foundation, and how - Pacifica, Facebook, Foursquare, and Google - are more similar than we think.

Google and Facebook in the most positive light, as originally being founded to try to solve for the same thing as Lewis Hill and the Pacifica Foundation... In terms of treating people as individuals and creating communities and spaces where people can share ideas. Now Facebook and Google... make the argument that you could have a for-profit company and using technology you can treat people as individuals by doing hyper-targeting advertising... I don't know if this is going to be successful or not, but these conversations around privacy... The demands on an organization to both make enough revenue to support itself while also preserving the intention or values of its founders... I think we all need to be conscious of this new technology and the changes, and use our wisdom and values to make decisions about how we use this technology.
